Święta Katarzyna (
Saint Catherine) – the convent
The
begenning of the convent have their origin
in the legendary person of king Władysław
Jagiełło’s knight, Wacławek, who for his
loyalty and courage was given that ground.
Wacławek with the help of some monks maneged
to build there a tiny wooden church. Its
altar was decorated with the Saint Catherine
figure, the martyr whose name was later
given to that church and the whole village.
In 1534 the fire destroyed the church and
the reconstruction laseted several years. In
1723 thanks to archbishop Szeniawski’s
agreement people made the first churchyard,
existed till 1834. Then, as the chronicle
states, the church was transfered to the
nuns who were left homeless after the fire
of their own convent in Drzewica. In 1847
the next fire destroyed the church, this
time the rebuilding took two years.
